Progress of My 6 Year Old
Well, my 6 year old "prodigy" is progressing quite nicely. Her ear is improving; her technique and coordination is improving; and her writing and theory lessons are improving. I'm really proud of her.
The one area that she struggles in is sight reading. Of course, this is often the most difficult skill to master, even for adults. My 6 year old still has a hard time playing the notes from the staff, without my having to write in the letter names.
However, yesterday's lesson saw a breakthrough. Though she doubted her ability to be able to read the notes without seeing the letter names, I gently encouraged her that she could do it. In fact, I reassured her that "you already know how to do this; you just don't know it yet."
This gentle reinforcement worked well. By the end of our 30 minutes lesson, she was reading the notes off the staff, and then playing them on the keyboard - and not a single letter name was written in!
