    Tuning a New Piano

As a NJ piano teacher, students sometimes ask me how often should a new piano be tuned.

A new piano must undergo a "break-in" period during the first twelve months. Good piano care involves scheduled tunings. Too many new piano owners start their new pianos on the road to destruction during this first year. A minimum of three tunings, spaced four months apart, are necessary the first year. Four tunings spaced three months apart would be better. This procedure is recommended by piano tuners to overcome stretching the new strings and to "set" the new piano parts that counterbalance the string tension within the piano. If this procedure isn't followed, a dropped pitch is certain and damage to the piano is probable. Additional costs for pitch raising and mechanical repairs is the net result.
